Hardly any roads, footpaths and mountains dropping straight into the sea. The coast is full of <strong>sea caves<\/strong>, each more beautiful than the last \u2013 a paradise for swimming, snorkelling and diving.<\/p><p>Three of us set off \u2013 Aaron, Gerrit and Noah \u2013 with masks, fins and a camera. Amphorae were the shipping containers of antiquity: they carried wine, oil and fish sauce all over the Mediterranean. The routes past the Aegadian Islands were busy, and the seabed still tells that story.<\/p><h2>If you find an artefact in the sea<\/h2><p>It\u2019s an incredible feeling \u2013 but an archaeological find is not a souvenir. In Italy underwater cultural heritage is protected by law and belongs to the State. What to do:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Don\u2019t touch or move it<\/strong>: its position is valuable information for archaeologists.<\/li><li><strong>Take a photo<\/strong> and note the spot as precisely as possible.<\/li><li><strong>Report it<\/strong> to the authorities: in Sicily to the Soprintendenza del Mare, or to the Coast Guard or Carabinieri.<\/li><\/ul><h2>Golden rules for cave dives<\/h2><ul><li>Never alone, and never beyond your level of experience.<\/li><li>Scuba diving inside caves requires specific training.<\/li><li>Check the weather and sea: with swell, caves become dangerous.<\/li><li>Always bring a torch.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><div class=\"blk narrow rv\"><div class=\"prose\"><h2>Underwater history in Cefal\u00f9 too<\/h2><p>You don\u2019t have to go all the way to the Aegadian Islands to swim over history.
