Giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions sleeping on benches: the animals here aren\u2019t afraid of people. The national park rules are strict \u2013 and rightly so.<\/p><h2>Cotopaxi volcano<\/h2><p>At almost 5,900 metres, Cotopaxi is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Its snow-capped cone dominates the landscape south of Quito. At this altitude you feel every step: acclimatise gradually.<\/p><h2>Ba\u00f1os, adventure capital<\/h2><p>Ba\u00f1os is the gateway to the Amazon and a paradise for adrenaline lovers. Here we went <strong>rafting<\/strong> and <strong>canyoning<\/strong>, saw the <strong>Pail\u00f3n del Diablo<\/strong> \u2013 a spectacular waterfall plunging into a narrow gorge \u2013 and tried the famous <strong>\u201cswing of death\u201d<\/strong>, which swings out over the void with views of the mountains.<\/p><h2>The Amazon<\/h2><p>Then the jungle: humid heat, brown rivers, sounds everywhere. An ecosystem that reminds us how important it is to protect forests \u2013 even small ones close to home.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"blk narrow rv\"><div class=\"prose\"><h2>Tips for a trip to Ecuador<\/h2><ul><li><strong>Altitude<\/strong>: Quito and the Andes are very high. Give yourself a couple of days to adjust.<\/li><li><strong>Layers<\/strong>: in one trip you go from cold volcanoes to the heat of the jungle.<\/li><li><strong>Sun<\/strong>: at the equator and at altitude the sun is very strong.
