However, the water does not freeze because it is slightly above the freezing point and is also in motion.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"stack\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"yt\" data-yt=\"KivdSyrxyEA\" aria-label=\"Video\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/KivdSyrxyEA\/hqdefault.jpg)\"><span class=\"play\"><\/span><small>Watch the video<\/small><\/button><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"blk rv\"><div class=\"stack\"><div class=\"prose\"><h3>Entering the Glacier<\/h3><p>We planned the trip over a weekend with the experienced ice swimmer Christof Wandratsch. We took a cable car up onto the glacier. We followed the ice swimmers, who knew the way straight away, to a small hole. That was the entrance. We went inside and couldn\u2019t believe we were inside a glacier. The walls glowed a deep blue and we made our way through a long glacial system until we reached a water channel. At first we travelled along it in a large rubber dinghy, and it was at that moment that the ice swimmers made it clear to us that we would soon be swimming in that channel. I dipped my hand into the freezing water and thought that only madmen would go in there.<\/p><h3>The Experience of Ice Swimming<\/h3><p>A few minutes later, we finished our rubber dinghy trip and had to get changed. My father and I were the first to go in. I simply switched off my mind and stopped thinking about the freezing water I would soon feel. \u201cDown the ladder and in\u201d \u2013 that was my only thought. My body was flooded with adrenaline when my feet touched the water. I went in completely and started swimming, feeling the freezing water that was almost enough to freeze me solid.
