How to cut a hole in the ice for an ice bath
Thick ice, a saw, an axe and plenty of patience. How to open a hole in the ice safely for a cold dip – and what you should never do.
First things first: will the ice hold?
Ever wondered how to cut a hole in the ice to get into the water? In our video we do it step by step. But before you pick up the saw, only one question matters: will the ice hold you?
As a general guide, you need at least 10 cm of solid, clear ice to walk on a lake. White ice, snow-covered ice, cracks or water on the surface are much weaker. Near the shore, reeds, streams and inlets the ice is often thinner. If in doubt, stay off. And always check the local rules: on many lakes cutting the ice is not allowed.

What you need
- an ice auger or an axe for the first hole;
- an ice saw to cut the sides;
- a shovel or rake to remove the blocks;
- a rope and a stable anchor point on shore;
- a towel, warm clothes and a hot drink ready.

Step by step
- Choose the spot: close to the shore, where the water is shallow and you know the bottom.
- Mark a rectangle big enough to get in and out comfortably.
- Make a first hole with the auger or axe, then cut the sides with the saw.
- Remove the blocks by cutting them smaller and pushing them under the ice or pulling them out.
- Prepare your exit: a clean edge, a ladder or a step. Getting out with cold hands is the hardest part.
- Mark the hole when you’re done so nobody falls in.
Non-negotiable rules
- Never alone: one person always stays on solid ice or on shore.
- Never under the ice: keep your head out and stay close to the edge.
- No intense breathing exercises before getting into the water.
- A few seconds to a minute is enough, especially the first few times.
