Swimming in a Glacier
Swimming in a glacier at 0 °C: our adventure in the hidden water channels inside the Hintertux Glacier. An extreme and unforgettable experience.
The Hintertux Glacier
The Hintertux Glacier is one of the most famous in the world. It conceals a labyrinth of passages and water channels within it. But that is not the only reason why this glacier is so special. The water temperatures inside the glacier are around 0°C. However, the water does not freeze because it is slightly above the freezing point and is also in motion.
Entering the Glacier
We planned the trip over a weekend with the experienced ice swimmer Christof Wandratsch. We took a cable car up onto the glacier. We followed the ice swimmers, who knew the way straight away, to a small hole. That was the entrance. We went inside and couldn’t believe we were inside a glacier. The walls glowed a deep blue and we made our way through a long glacial system until we reached a water channel. At first we travelled along it in a large rubber dinghy, and it was at that moment that the ice swimmers made it clear to us that we would soon be swimming in that channel. I dipped my hand into the freezing water and thought that only madmen would go in there.
The Experience of Ice Swimming
A few minutes later, we finished our rubber dinghy trip and had to get changed. My father and I were the first to go in. I simply switched off my mind and stopped thinking about the freezing water I would soon feel. “Down the ladder and in” – that was my only thought. My body was flooded with adrenaline when my feet touched the water. I went in completely and started swimming, feeling the freezing water that was almost enough to freeze me solid. After a quick swim back and forth, I climbed back up the ladder and felt absolutely brilliant.
An extraordinary experience – highly recommended!

The Wim Hof Method
This unique adventure aligns perfectly with the principles of the Wim Hof Method, which combines breathing techniques, cold exposure and mental training to unlock the potential of the human body and mind. The glacier’s icy waters provide an incredible setting for practising cold immersion, a key aspect of the method that builds resilience, boosts energy and enhances mental clarity.
If you are inspired by this experience and would like to learn how to harness the power of the Wim Hof Method, you can sign up for our courses. Embrace the cold, challenge your limits and discover the transformative benefits of this practice!
