Inside the Rocca di Cefalù: our cave adventure

Ten years of waiting, then we finally got into the cave system of the Rocca di Cefalù. What lies inside the mountain that towers over the town – and what to see on the Rocca without going underground.

Ten years for this moment

The Rocca di Cefalù is the town’s symbol: a limestone headland about 270 metres high, rising above the old town and the cathedral. Everyone knows it from the outside. Far fewer know that inside the mountain there’s a cave system.

We waited ten years to be able to go in. When it finally happened, we switched on our torches and the camera: here is what we found.

What’s inside the mountain

Limestone slowly dissolves in rainwater. Over thousands of years it forms tunnels, chambers and shafts: this is called karst. Inside the Rocca it’s pitch black, the air is damp and cool even in summer, and every step needs care. A silent world just metres from streets full of tourists.

Important: don’t go on your own

The Rocca caves are not a tourist trail. Don’t go in without permission and an experienced guide: the ground is unstable, it’s easy to lose your bearings and the environment needs protecting. Caves are fragile habitats, for bats for example. Leave everything as it is, take nothing and leave nothing behind. That’s exactly why we also organised a clean-up in a coastal cave.

What to see on the Rocca (without going underground)

  • The Temple of Diana: a very ancient megalithic structure halfway up.
  • The walls and castle ruins at the top, with medieval cisterns and ovens.
  • The view over the rooftops of Cefalù, the cathedral and the coast as far as the Madonie.

The trail starts in the old town and takes about an hour on foot at an easy pace. Bring water and comfortable shoes and set off early in summer. More details in our article on nature hikes around Cefalù.
