Nature hikes around Cefalù

From the Rocca above the old town to the forests of the Madonie: the hikes around Cefalù we recommend to our friends – with a few tips on what to bring.

Not just the sea

Cefalù is famous for its beaches, but behind it rise the Madonie mountains: forests, mountain villages and peaks that turn white in winter. In half an hour by car you go from the sea to another world. Here are the outings we love most.

Our starting point is Hotel Kalura, on Kalura Bay just outside Cefalù: the Rocca rises right behind it and the Madonie are half an hour away by car. If you prefer two wheels, you can hire a bike at the Kalura Bike Station, which also runs guided tours.

The Rocca of Cefalù

The classic: from the old town a path climbs up the Rocca, the headland that towers over the town. On the way up you pass ancient walls and the so-called Temple of Diana; at the top, the remains of the castle and a view that takes in the Cathedral, the rooftops and the sea. It takes about an hour – best early in the morning or late in the afternoon in summer. Check the trail’s opening hours before you go.

Sanctuary of Gibilmanna

In the hills above Cefalù, surrounded by forest, the sanctuary is a starting point for walks among chestnut and holm oak trees, with views of the coast.

The Madonie Park

A nature park with some of the highest peaks in Sicily, such as Pizzo Carbonara, and plateaus such as Piano Battaglia. In the woods near Castelbuono lies the Bosco degli Agrifogli giganti (giant holly wood) of Piano Pomo, an almost fairytale-like place.

In the mountains the weather changes quickly: even in summer, always bring a warm layer.

Castelbuono

A village in the Madonie with the Ventimiglia castle, quiet alleys and a long tradition linked to manna, the sap of the ash tree. It is also the village where our sweatshirts and T-shirts are sewn by hand. Perfect to combine with a hike in the surrounding woods.

Gole di Tiberio

A canyon carved by the Pollina river, in the area of San Mauro Castelverde: high rock walls and cool water. It is usually visited on guided excursions, by canoe or on foot along the river.

  • hiking shoes, or at least shoes with a good sole;
