From Wreck to Comeback
In an age dominated by mass consumption, we chose a different path: to restore an old Hobie Cat Tiger rather than buy a new one. This decision was not just about saving money; it represented a commitment to sustainability, creativity and a spirit of adventure.
The Beginning of “Addicted 1”
It all began with a well-worn Hobie Cat, which we affectionately nicknamed “The Addicted 1”. Once a regular on the Italian racing circuit, this 20-year-old catamaran had seen better days. Its glorious past lay hidden beneath layers of wear and tear, but we could see its potential.
The first step was to assess its condition. We sanded down the hulls, revealing small cracks and areas in need of repair. We removed old stickers and thoroughly cleaned the surfaces. We then applied boat-grade resin to repair the critical areas. Once smoothed and dried, the resin prepared the hulls for a fresh coat of paint, restoring them to their original aerodynamic design.
A Labour of Love
Restoring “The Addicted 1” was no easy task. Reassembling the catamaran tested our patience, but every bolt tightened and every sail hoisted brought us closer to our goal. Every task we completed reminded us why we’d embarked on this adventure: to breathe new life into something forgotten, whilst honouring its past.
The First Sail
With the restoration complete, the moment of truth had arrived. When we hoisted the sails, “The Addicted 1” glided across the water with agility, proving its worth once again. The sensation of speed and freedom was breathtaking, even in the lightest of winds. It was a testament to Hobie Cat’s engineering and to the effort we’d put into bringing her back to life.
Why Recycling is Important
In a world increasingly burdened by waste, our project highlights the importance of recycling and creative reuse. Restoring an old catamaran, rather than buying a new one, was our way of reducing waste and minimising our environmental impact. A small but significant step towards sustainability, proving that second chances can be beautiful – and fast, like a Ferrari on water.
