What to grow indoors in autumn and winter
The days are getting shorter outside, but something green can still grow on your windowsill. The best plants to sow indoors, tips to get them started and a gift idea that’s a little different.
Why sow indoors right now?
Autumn and winter are perfect seasons for a small windowsill garden: indoor temperatures are stable, and watching a seedling sprout while it’s grey outside has something magical about it. It is also an easy way to bring children closer to nature.
The basic rules
- Light: the most important thing. Choose the brightest window, ideally south-facing. Turn the pot every few days so the plant grows straight.
- Temperature: most seeds germinate well between 18 and 25 °C. Avoid placing pots on top of radiators.
- Water: soil moist but never soaked. Little and often is better than a lot at once.
- Patience: some seeds sprout in a few days, others take a few weeks.
For beginners: easy plants
Habanero chilli
A plant that does really well in a pot and loves the warmth of your home. With plenty of light, after a few months it rewards you with its hot fruits.
Dwarf sunflower
It grows fast and is very rewarding: perfect for growing with children too.
Chocolate flower
A windowsill curiosity with an easy level of care.

For those who want a challenge
Aloe vera
Medium level: it loves light and little water. Once grown, it is a very hardy houseplant.
Peppermint
The scent is irresistible, but it is harder to start from seed: it needs regular watering and plenty of light.
Giant bamboo
The most demanding: for those who love a challenge and want to watch something really special grow.
What is a NatureCube?
A small alder wood cube filled with nutrient granules and seeds, sealed to protect it from germs. Just open it and follow the instructions: after a short time the seeds become seedlings. Most of the seeds are certified organic and come from well-known suppliers in Austria and Germany. It makes an original gift for Christmas, a birthday or for someone who “doesn’t need anything”.
