A travel kit with less plastic: what to pack
No leaking bottles, no clear plastic bag at airport security: a solid, light toiletry bag with far less plastic. Here is our checklist.
Why switch to solid products when travelling
Anyone who travels with hand luggage only knows it: liquids are the problem. 100 ml bottles, the clear plastic bag, shampoo spilling over your clothes. With solid products all of this disappears: they take up less space, weigh less and don’t count towards the liquid limits. And at the end of the trip you’re not left with a handful of mini bottles to throw away.
The checklist
1. Shampoo bar
A bar for your hair replaces the bottle. Just rub it on wet hair or between your hands.
2. Solid soap for body and face
One for everything: shower, hands, even emergency hand-washing of clothes. A sea salt or propolis soap is perfect for travelling.
3. Bamboo toothbrush
Light, with a handle made of a renewable material. Pair it with toothpaste tablets or a small tube.
4. Deodorant
A compact stick or roll-on to keep in your day bag.
5. A fabric bag
To keep everything together without plastic bags. Also great for shopping, the beach or dirty laundry.

How to carry a wet soap bar
The trick is to let it dry before you leave: leave it out overnight. For the journey, a travel soap tin or a fabric pouch is enough; at the hotel, put it on something that lets the water drain.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take solid shampoo and soap in my hand luggage?
Yes, solid products are not considered liquids and don’t fall under the 100 ml limit.
Does a shampoo bar work with hard water?
Yes, although with very hard water your hair may feel different. In that case a final rinse with water and a little vinegar helps.
How should I store a bamboo toothbrush?
Rinse it and let it air-dry standing upright. Avoid keeping it wet in a closed case for many hours.
How long do solid products last when travelling?
A 100 g bar easily lasts for several weeks of travel.
Travel light
Fewer bottles, less weight, less plastic: everything you need fits in a cotton bag.
