Adventure in Cape Verde: fishing with locals, grogue and wild nature
Volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic, fishing boats and the smell of sugar cane. Our trip to Cape Verde, between the sea, local rum and wild landscapes.
Islands of fire in the Atlantic
Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean, off West Africa. Each island is a world of its own: endless beaches, green mountains, craters, fishing villages. And a hospitality that even has its own name here: morabeza.
Aaron and Noah went with the camera to experience the islands the way Cape Verdeans do.

Fishing with the locals
The sea is the heart of life in Cape Verde. We went out with local fishermen in their boats and saw how much work goes into a fish that ends up on the table. No industrial fishing: small boats, skilled hands and respect for the sea.
Grogue, Cape Verde’s rum
We also visited producers of grogue, the traditional spirit made from sugar cane. In many distilleries the cane is still pressed and distilled the old way, in small batches. A piece of culture you can taste.
Wild, exotic nature
Between the islands we explored incredibly varied landscapes: green valleys with tropical plants, black volcanic rock and cliffs dropping into the ocean. If you love tropical plants, also see how we planted exotic trees in our garden in Sicily.
Tips for a trip to Cape Verde
- Choose your islands by what you’re looking for: beaches and wind on some, mountains and trails on others.
- Protect yourself from the sun: close to the equator it’s very strong, even when it’s windy.
- Travel light and with little plastic: here’s our travel kit with less plastic.
- Buy local: fish, fruit and grogue straight from the people who make them.
