At night in the forest: shirtless hiking, running and an ice bath

Minus 5 degrees, a campfire, torches and a frozen lake in the middle of the Zollhaus forest. Our night-time cold challenges – and what we learned from them.

Why go out into the cold at night

During the day you see the cold. At night you only feel it: the forest is dark, your breath becomes the only thing to focus on and every step needs attention. That’s why, during our winters at the Landhotel Altes Zollhaus in Germany, we came up with three small night challenges – and filmed them for our YouTube channel.

The Zollhaus sits at around 800 metres above sea level, in a forest clearing close to the Czech border. In winter there is snow, ice and two natural lakes right next to the house: the perfect place to train body and mind in the cold.

1. Shirtless hiking at -5 °C

For about 30 minutes we stayed outside shirtless, at night, at -5 °C, with nothing but a fire. The trick isn’t to “tough it out” but to stay calm: slow breathing, relaxed shoulders, keep moving. At the end we went into the Zollhaus’ frozen lake.

2. Night run through the forest

Next we ran through the forest in the middle of the night, shirtless and carrying torches, at -1 °C. When you run, your body produces heat and the cold almost becomes pleasant. The finish line? The lake, with the water at around 4 °C.

3. A midnight ice bath

The third video is the simplest and maybe the most beautiful: an ice bath in the middle of the forest, in the dark, surrounded by silence. No race, no stopwatch. Just your breath and the cold.

What we learned

  • Your head decides before your body does. The first seconds are the hardest; if you can breathe out long and slow, the panic passes.
  • Moving helps. Walking or running makes cold air much easier to handle.
  • Afterwards matters as much as before. Warm clothes ready, a hot drink and – if there is one – the sauna.
  • Never alone. Even more so at night: someone always stays on the shore with a light.

Before you try it

This is our own experience, not medical advice. Cold puts strain on your heart and circulation: if you have any health issues, talk to your doctor first. Start with cold showers and short daytime dips, only go into water where you know the bottom, and never do intense breathing exercises in or near water. Here is our guide on how to start ice swimming safely.

Try it with us at the Landhotel Altes Zollhaus

Our guided ice baths take place at the Landhotel Altes Zollhaus in Germany’s Ore Mountains: in the forest lake next to the hotel or in an ice-cold tub.

  • Wim Hof Method weekends with certified instructors
  • Breathing, ice baths and mindset
  • Four saunas to warm up afterwards

And if you want to see the Zollhaus lake at its most competitive, come to the Zollhaus Open 2027, the German Ice Swimming Championships, on 19–20 February 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Is it dangerous to be shirtless in the cold?

It can be if you overdo it. Keep it short, keep moving, listen to your body (strong shivering, hands that stop working) and get back into the warm straight away. If you have health issues, talk to your doctor first.

How long should an ice bath last?

At the beginning a few seconds to a minute is enough. With experience the time gets longer, but the goal isn’t a record: always get out before you lose feeling.

Can I take an ice bath alone at night?

No. At night even less so: you always need someone on the shore with a light who can help you get out and warm up.

Where can I try it with a guide?

At the Retreat Zentrum of the Landhotel Altes Zollhaus in Germany’s Ore Mountains, there are Wim Hof Method weekends with guided ice baths and sauna.
